About Fritz Peterson
Fred Ingels "Fritz" Peterson broke in with the New York Yankees in 1966, throwing a complete-game victory over Baltimore in his major-league debut. He spent nine seasons as one of New York's most dependable left-handed starters, topping out at 20-11 with a 2.90 ERA in 1970, a year that also brought his only All-Star selection. From 1968 through 1972 he led the American League in fewest walks per nine innings five years running, a control streak matched only by Cy Young. The Yankees dealt Peterson to Cleveland in April 1974 in the trade that brought Chris Chambliss to New York, and his 1975 Topps card shows him as an Indian during his best Cleveland season, a 14-8 mark with a 3.94 ERA. His playing career wound down with Texas in 1976 and ended in retirement the following year after shoulder surgery. He finished 133-131 with a 3.30 ERA and 1,015 strikeouts over eleven seasons, and remains best remembered off the field for swapping families with teammate Mike Kekich in 1973.
