About George Hendrick
George Hendrick broke into pro ball with Burlington in 1968, leading his league with a .327 average, and reached the majors for good with Oakland in 1971, picking up a World Series ring in 1972. Traded to Cleveland the following spring along with catcher Dave Duncan, he manned the Indians outfield pictured on his 1975 Topps #109 card and was selected to consecutive All-Star teams in 1974 and 1975. Dealt to San Diego and then to St. Louis in 1978, Hendrick became a middle-of-the-order anchor for the Cardinals, leading the club in home runs every season from 1980 through 1983 while earning two more All-Star selections and two Silver Slugger Awards, capped by a championship on the 1982 World Series team. He later helped the 1986 Angels to a division title before retiring in 1988 with a .278 average, 267 home runs and 1,111 RBI, one of the first players to reach 100 homers in each league. Teammates and writers called him "Jogging George" for his unhurried style on the field and "Silent George" for refusing interviews; he later spent two decades as a big-league coach, including a stint as the Cardinals' hitting coach.
