About Dan Spillner
A right-handed pitcher out of Federal Way High School in Washington, Dan Spillner was San Diego's second-round pick in the 1970 draft and debuted with the Padres on May 21, 1974. His 1975 Topps card, #222, captures his second big-league season, in which he led the Padres staff with 104 strikeouts. After three losing seasons as a starter, he shifted to the bullpen, and in 1977 was part of the majors' busiest relief corps, making 76 appearances alongside teammate Dave Tomlin, one behind Rollie Fingers' club-high 78. Traded to Cleveland in 1978, Spillner went 16-11 as an Indians starter in 1980 and came within two outs of a no-hitter that August before a Leo Sutherland single broke it up. He found his best form back in the bullpen in 1982, going 12-10 with a 2.49 ERA and 21 saves. He closed his twelve-year career with the Chicago White Sox in 1985, finishing 75-89 with a 4.21 ERA, 878 strikeouts and 50 saves in 556 games.
