About Johnny Grubb
Johnny Grubb reached the majors after passing on three earlier offers to sign, finishing his college career at Florida State and helping the Seminoles to a runner-up finish in the 1970 College World Series. San Diego drafted the outfielder in the first round of the 1971 secondary phase, and he debuted that September. His first full season, 1973, saw him hit .311 and finish sixth in NL Rookie of the Year voting. In 1974 he earned his only All-Star selection as the Padres' sole representative, popping out in his lone at-bat against Catfish Hunter - a season captured on his 1975 Topps #298 card. Traded to Cleveland, then Texas, then Detroit, Grubb became a dangerous designated hitter and pinch-hitter, stringing together a 21-game hit streak with the 1979 Rangers. His signature moment came in the 1984 ALCS, when a two-run double off Dan Quisenberry sent Detroit toward a World Series title over his old Padres club. He retired in 1987 with a .278 average, 99 homers, and 475 RBI over 16 seasons.
