About Fred Kendall

A hometown product of Torrance, California, where he shared an American Legion team with future big leaguers Bobby Grich, Dave LaRoche and George Foster, Fred Kendall was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the fourth round of the 1967 draft. Blocked in Cincinnati's system by an up-and-coming Johnny Bench, he was claimed by the expansion San Diego Padres in the 1968 expansion draft and reached the majors in 1969. Kendall became San Diego's primary catcher from 1973 through 1976, earning Padres team MVP honors in 1973 after career highs of a .282 average and 10 home runs, and leading the National League in games caught in 1976. Traded to Cleveland and then Boston, he returned to San Diego to close out his career, retiring after the 1980 season with 877 games played, 603 hits and a .234 average. Kendall later coached in the majors for Detroit, Colorado and Kansas City. His son, Jason Kendall, became a three-time All-Star catcher.
