About Chris Cannizzaro

Christopher John Cannizzaro, born May 3, 1938, in Oakland, California, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals out of San Leandro High School in 1956 and made his major-league debut as a defensive catcher on April 17, 1960. Prized for a powerful throwing arm despite a light bat, he was claimed by the expansion Mets in the 1961 draft and became an original member of the wild 1962 club, where manager Casey Stengel mangled his name into "Canzoneri" while praising his ability to shut down enemy base stealers. Cannizzaro found his best seasons in San Diego, becoming the Padres' first franchise All-Star in 1969 and setting career highs with a .279 average, five home runs and 42 RBIs in 1970. He also caught for the Cubs and Dodgers before closing out a 13-year career back with San Diego in 1974. His final Topps card, issued in 1975, shows him airbrushed into Padres colors — that season he never left Triple-A Hawaii, serving as a player-coach while Topps worked from an old photo.
