About Gene Locklear
Gene Locklear, a full-blooded member of North Carolina's Lumbee people, signed with the Cincinnati Reds as an undrafted free agent in 1969 after the Pittsburgh Pirates passed on him at a tryout camp. He won back-to-back minor-league batting titles at Trois-Rivières in 1971 and Indianapolis in 1972, where teammates nicknamed him "Chief," a label Locklear later called a term of respect. Traded to San Diego in June 1973, he became the Padres' regular left fielder by 1975, hitting .321 in 237 at-bats alongside rookie Dave Winfield, the season captured on his 1975 Topps rookie card, #13. Locklear closed his five-year major-league career with Cincinnati, San Diego, and the New York Yankees (1973-77), finishing at .274 with 9 home runs, then played a season in Japan for the Nippon-Ham Fighters. A lifelong painter who sold work throughout his playing days, he had one piece hang in the White House during the Ford administration.
