1975 Topps #84 Enzo Hernandez

About Enzo Hernandez
Enzo Hernández, a slick-fielding Venezuelan shortstop, signed with the Houston Astros organization out of the Tiburones de La Guaira in 1966 under scout Tony Pacheco. Baltimore acquired him in a December 1968 trade, then sent him to the San Diego Padres in a December 1970 six-player deal for Pat Dobson and Tom Dukes. Wearing No. 11 in tribute to his idol and mentor Luis Aparicio, Hernández debuted April 17, 1971, and won the Padres' starting shortstop job as a rookie, becoming the first Latin American shortstop to steal 20-plus bases in a National League season. His finest year came in 1974 — the season reflected on this 1975 Topps card — when he set career highs with 119 hits, 34 RBIs, 55 runs, and 37 stolen bases, led the majors with 24 sacrifice hits, and was named NL Player of the Week that August, a first for a Latin player. A .224 career hitter over eight seasons split between San Diego and the 1978 Dodgers, he returned to Venezuela, where he died in 2013.
