About Doug Rau
Doug Rau grew up in Columbus, Texas, was drafted by Baltimore out of high school in 1967, and instead went to Texas A&M, where the Dodgers made him their first-round secondary-phase pick in 1970. The left-hander debuted for Los Angeles on September 2, 1972, and by 1974 had won a rotation spot as the Dodgers took the NL pennant, going 13-11. His #269 1975 Topps card catches him coming off that season; he followed with a 15-9, 3.11 ERA year, then went 16-12 with a 2.57 ERA — second-best in the NL — in 1976. Rau anchored the rotation through Los Angeles's back-to-back pennants in 1977-78, throwing two scoreless innings in the '78 World Series. He's remembered in Dodgers lore for a profanity-laced mound argument with manager Tommy Lasorda during Game 4 of the '77 Series, caught live on Lasorda's microphone. Rotator cuff surgery limited him to 11 games in 1979; he closed his career with the 1981 Angels, finishing 81-60, 3.35 ERA over nine seasons.
