1975 Topps #294 Geoff Zahn

About Geoff Zahn
Geoffrey Clayton Zahn was born December 19, 1945, in Baltimore, Maryland, and starred at the University of Michigan before the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted him in the fifth round in January 1968. He spent six years in the Dodgers' system — where instructor Roger Craig taught him a forkball — before debuting on September 2, 1973. His 1975 Topps card, #294, is his recognized rookie card, issued the year Los Angeles traded him to the Chicago Cubs for Burt Hooton. After a brief Cubs stint, he asked for his release in 1977 and signed with the Minnesota Twins, winning ten-plus games in six straight seasons (1977-82) for 81 victories. A 1981 free agent with the California Angels, Zahn went 18-8 in 1982, helping California win the AL West and earning a spot as The Sporting News' All-Star left-hander. A torn rotator cuff — his eighth surgery — forced his retirement before the 1986 season; he coached at Pepperdine and spent six seasons as head coach at his alma mater, Michigan.
