About Doug Rader
A slick-fielding third baseman nicknamed "the Red Rooster" for the shock of red hair that always spilled out from under his cap, Doug Rader anchored the Houston Astros infield for nine seasons. Signed by the Astros as an amateur free agent out of Illinois Wesleyan University in 1965, he broke into the majors on July 31, 1967, and took over at third base full time in 1968. His bat came alive in 1970, when he clubbed a career-high 25 home runs and won the first of five consecutive National League Gold Glove Awards (1970-74), establishing himself as the league's premier defender at the hot corner. His final season in Houston, 1975, is the one pictured on his 1975 Topps card, #165, before he closed out his career with the San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays. Over 11 big-league seasons he hit .251 with 155 home runs and 722 RBI, and he later managed the Texas Rangers, Chicago White Sox, and California Angels.
