About Woodie Fryman
Woodrow "Woodie" Fryman broke into pro ball late — the Fleming County, Kentucky farmer turned down bonus offers from five clubs over five years before finally signing with Pittsburgh in 1965 at age 25. Nicknamed the "Fleming Flame" for the fastball he threw as an amateur for the hometown Flemingsburg Aces, the left-hander stuck in the Pirates' rotation in 1966, reeling off three straight shutouts, including a near-perfect game against the Mets broken up only by a leadoff single. Traded to Philadelphia for Jim Bunning after the 1967 season, he made his first All-Star team the next June. Claimed off waivers by Detroit in August 1972, Fryman went 10-3 down the stretch to help the Tigers edge Boston for the AL East, then started twice in the ALCS loss to Oakland, including the decisive Game Five. Dealt to Montreal in December 1974, he made his second All-Star team in 1976 and helped the Expos reach the 1981 NLCS as a reliever. His 1975 Topps card catches him as a Tiger, issued months after Detroit had already dealt him to Montreal — a snapshot of the lefty who'd helped clinch the 1972 AL East before his second act with the Expos.
