About Willie Horton

A product of Detroit's sandlots, Willie Horton signed with his hometown Tigers out of Northwestern High School after a home run at Tiger Stadium in a city championship game earned him the nickname "Willie the Wonder." The right-handed slugger debuted in 1963 and became Detroit's first Black superstar, spending 15 seasons with the club. His best year came in 1968, when he hit a career-high 36 homers, batted .304 in the World Series, and threw out Lou Brock at the plate in Game 5 to help the Tigers beat the Cardinals in seven. A four-time All-Star (1965, 1968, 1970, 1973), Horton finished with 325 career home runs over 18 big-league seasons. His 1975 Topps card catches him fresh off winning the American League's Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, the first Tiger so honored, after a 25-homer, 92-RBI season. Detroit retired his No. 23 in 2000.
