1975 Topps #245 Mickey Lolich

About Mickey Lolich
Mickey Lolich signed with the Tigers as an amateur free agent in 1958 and reached the majors on May 12, 1963, spending 13 seasons anchoring Detroit's rotation and winning at least 14 games every year from 1964 through 1974. His signature moment came in the 1968 World Series against St. Louis, where he threw three complete-game victories — including a 4-1 Game 7 win over Bob Gibson — and was named Series MVP. In 1971 he led the American League with 25 wins, 308 strikeouts and 376 innings, finishing runner-up for the Cy Young Award. A three-time All-Star (1969, 1971, 1972), he retired with 2,832 strikeouts, at the time the most ever by a left-hander, and still holds Tigers career records for strikeouts and starts. Popular, portly and easygoing, Lolich called himself "the beer-drinker's idol." He came by his signature left arm strangely: a childhood tricycle accident broke his left collarbone, and strengthening the injured arm during recovery turned him into a lefty. Dealt to the Mets after the 1975 season pictured on this card, he finished his career with San Diego in 1979. Lolich died in February 2026 at age 85.
