1975 Topps #116 Lerrin LaGrow

About Lerrin LaGrow
Lerrin LaGrow was a hard-throwing 6-foot-5 right-hander out of Arizona State, where he helped the Sun Devils win the 1969 College World Series before Detroit took him in the sixth round that June. He reached the majors in July 1970 and is best remembered for one pitch in Game 2 of the 1972 ALCS: he drilled Oakland's Bert Campaneris in the ankle, Campaneris fired his bat at the mound, and both were suspended for the rest of the series. By his 1975 Topps card, LaGrow had moved from the Tigers' bullpen into the rotation, making 34 starts in 1974 and 26 in 1975. Sold to St. Louis in 1976 and traded to the White Sox in 1977, he became a short-relief specialist, saving a career-best 25 games for the 'South Side Hit Men' and 16 more in 1978. He closed out his ten-season career in 1980 with the Phillies, released that July, months before the club won the World Series. LaGrow finished 34-55 with 54 saves and a 4.11 ERA.
