About Tug McGraw
Frank Edwin McGraw Jr. got his nickname as an infant, when his mother began calling him "Tugger" for the vigorous way he nursed. He broke into the majors with the Mets in 1965 at 20, starting under Casey Stengel before Gil Hodges converted him to relief in 1969, a move that helped New York to its first World Series title. McGraw became one of the National League's top firemen, posting a 1.70 ERA in both 1971 and 1972 and earning his first All-Star nod in '72. When the 1973 Mets stumbled early, he rallied the club with his mantra "Ya Gotta Believe," driving an improbable pennant run. That December the Mets, doubting his throwing arm, traded him to Philadelphia in a six-player deal for John Stearns and Del Unser — though Topps still pictured him as a Met on card #67 of the 1975 set. McGraw made a second All-Star team with the Phillies and struck out Willie Wilson to close the 1980 World Series, delivering the franchise's first title. He retired in 1984 with 180 saves and a 3.14 ERA, later known as the father of country star Tim McGraw. He died of brain cancer in 2004 at 59.
