About George Stone
George Stone broke into pro ball as a 20-year-old left-hander out of Louisiana Tech, where a no-hitter and a sub-1.50 career ERA made him the school's first player ever drafted, taken by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round of the 1966 draft. He debuted in September 1967 and settled into the Braves rotation, going 13-10 for the 1969 NL West champions on pinpoint control and a changeup taught him by GM Paul Richards. Traded to the Mets with Felix Millan after 1972, Stone had the finest year of his career in 1973, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage as the Mets rallied from last place to the NL East title. He started Game Four of the NLCS and pitched twice in relief in the 1973 World Series against Oakland, earning a save in Game Two. Arm trouble limited him in 1974-75, his final Mets seasons pictured on this 1975 Topps card, before a torn rotator cuff ended his career at 60-57 with a 3.89 ERA.
