1975 Topps #19 Jerry Koosman

About Jerry Koosman
Jerry Koosman, a hard-throwing left-hander from Appleton, Minnesota, signed with the Mets for $1,600 in 1964 after an Army catcher's father, a Shea Stadium usher, tipped the club to his arm. A pitching instructor's slider lesson turned him into a prospect, and in 1968 he authored one of the great rookie seasons: 19-12, a 2.08 ERA and seven shutouts, all Mets records, earning an All-Star berth and runner-up honors to Johnny Bench for NL Rookie of the Year. In 1969 he was co-ace of the "Miracle Mets," winning eight of his last nine regular-season decisions, then beating Baltimore twice in the World Series -- a two-hitter in Game Two and a comeback win in the Series-clinching Game Five -- as New York captured its first championship. He starred again in the 1973 pennant chase and won Game Five of that World Series. His career-best 1976 season brought 21 wins and a runner-up finish for the NL Cy Young Award. Koosman closed his 19-year career with 222 wins for the Mets, Twins, White Sox and Phillies; New York retired his No. 36 in 2021. His 1975 Topps card, #19, shows him still New York's dependable left-handed second man to Tom Seaver.
