About Bud Harrelson
"Bud" Harrelson's nickname traces to a kid brother who couldn't say "brother" and called him "Bud" instead. Signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent in 1963 out of San Francisco State, the switch-hitting shortstop debuted on September 2, 1965, and anchored New York's infield for 13 seasons. He was never much of a hitter — a career .236 average with just seven home runs — but his glove was exceptional: a .969 lifetime fielding percentage, a 1971 Gold Glove, and a then-record 54 consecutive errorless games at short in 1970. A two-time All-Star (1970-71), Harrelson helped the "Miracle Mets" stun Baltimore in the 1969 World Series and returned as a player in the 1973 pennant-winning season, a postseason remembered for his bench-clearing brawl with Pete Rose in Game 3 of the NLCS. Traded to Philadelphia in 1978 and finishing his career with Texas in 1980, he later coached New York's 1986 championship club and managed the Mets in 1990-91 — the only man to take part in all three of the franchise's first three World Series trips. He entered the Mets Hall of Fame in 1986.
