1975 Topps #394 Larvell Blanks

About Larvell Blanks
Larvell Blanks, a third-round pick out of Del Rio, Texas' San Felipe High School in the 1969 draft, earned his nickname "Sugar Bear" from Braves farmhands Ralph Garr and Darrell Evans during the 1969 Arizona Instructional League, who riffed off the hit song "Sugar, Sugar" to describe his aggressive hitting. He debuted with Atlanta on July 19, 1972, shuttling around the infield before a full season at Triple-A Richmond. When incumbent shortstop Craig Robinson faltered, Blanks won the job for 1975 — the season pictured on his card — batting .234 with three homers and 38 RBIs in 141 games, his only year as an everyday regular. That December he was traded twice in one day, eventually landing with Cleveland, where he became a versatile part-timer, hitting .280 and .286 in 1976-77. Later stops in Texas and a second Atlanta tour closed out a nine-year, .253 career before five more summers in the Mexican League.
