1975 Topps #227 Bob Watson

About Bob Watson
Robert José Watson broke in with the Houston Astros on September 9, 1966, out of Los Angeles' Fremont High School and Harbor Junior College. His high school coach, Phil Pote, noticing Watson idolized Orlando "Baby Bull" Cepeda, told him "You're too big to be a baby anything" and made "Bull" stick for good. A right-handed first baseman/left fielder, Watson anchored Houston through 1979, then closed out his career with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves, retiring in 1984 with a .295 average, 184 home runs, and 989 RBI. A two-time All-Star (1973, 1975), he crossed home plate in San Francisco on May 4, 1975, to score what was hailed as major league baseball's one-millionth run, edging Dave Concepción by four seconds. Watson hit for the cycle with Houston in 1977 and Boston in 1979, the first player to do so in both leagues, then reached the 1981 World Series with the Yankees. He later served as the Astros' general manager in 1993 — only the majors' second Black GM — then ran the Yankees, whose 1996 club made him the first Black GM to win a World Series. Houston inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 2020.
