About Larry Dierker
Lawrence Edward Dierker signed with the Houston Colt .45s at 17 for a $55,000 bonus after a bidding war with the Cubs, then made his major-league debut on his 18th birthday, September 22, 1964, striking out Willie Mays in his first inning of work. He spent his entire 14-year career (1964-1977) with the Colt .45s/Astros before a final season in St. Louis, and in 1969 became the franchise's first 20-game winner, going 20-13 with a 2.33 ERA and earning the first of two All-Star selections (1969, 1971). Injuries slowed him through the mid-1970s, but on July 9, 1976 he no-hit the Montreal Expos at the Astrodome for the signature moment of his playing days. Houston retired his uniform number 49 in 2002 - the same number that appears on his 1975 Topps card. Dierker went on to manage the Astros to four division titles in five seasons (1997-2001), winning NL Manager of the Year in 1998, after many years as the club's television and radio broadcaster.
