About Tommy Helms
Tommy Vann Helms broke into the majors with Cincinnati in 1964, signing with the Reds a few days past his 18th birthday out of Charlotte's West Mecklenburg High School. Shifted from shortstop to third base as a rookie to make room for Leo Cardenas and Pete Rose, he hit .284 in 1966 and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Moved to second base in 1967, Helms made the All-Star team in 1967 and 1968, then won back-to-back Gold Gloves in 1970-71 and started all five games of the 1970 World Series against Baltimore. On November 29, 1971, he headlined the trade Cincinnati sent to Houston, along with Lee May and Jimmy Stewart, for Joe Morgan. Helms anchored the Astros' infield from 1972-1974, leading National League second basemen in fielding percentage in 1974, before his playing time evaporated in 1975, the season pictured on this card. He later managed Cincinnati in 1988-89 and belongs to the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
