1975 Topps #252 Fred Scherman

About Fred Scherman
Frederick John Scherman Jr. was born July 25, 1944, in Dayton, Ohio, and signed with the Minnesota Twins in 1963 before Detroit drafted him in 1964. The left-hander reached the majors in 1969 and emerged as the Tigers' closer in 1971 under manager Billy Martin, setting a club record with 69 appearances and going 11-6 with a 2.71 ERA and 20 saves; Detroit fans voted him the "King Tiger" award that year and again in 1972, when he also pitched in Game 2 of the ALCS. With John Hiller established as Detroit's top lefty, the Tigers traded Scherman to Houston in December 1973 for Gary Sutherland and Jim Ray, the deal that put him in an Astros uniform for this 1975 Topps card. Back problems that turned out to be two ruptured discs limited him in 1974 and required offseason surgery, and after a rough start to 1975 Houston sold him to Montreal in June. He closed out his career with the Expos in 1976, finishing 33-26 with 39 saves and 297 strikeouts over eight seasons, then pitched in Japan for the Hiroshima Carp.
