About Jerry Johnson

Jerry Johnson's path to pro ball ran through the batter's box and, briefly, the boxing ring — he was a Golden Gloves standout in West Texas before the Mets signed him as a third baseman in 1962. Shaky glove work forced a conversion to the mound, and by the mid-1960s he was pitching full-time in the Mets' system. The Phillies drafted him away after 1967 and brought him to the majors in July 1968. Dealt to St. Louis, then San Francisco, in 1970, Johnson blossomed into one of the National League's top firemen, going 12-9 with 18 saves and a 2.97 ERA for the division-winning 1971 Giants and finishing sixth in that year's Cy Young voting. Claimed by Cleveland in 1973, then traded to Houston that December for Cecil Upshaw, he split his lone Astros season, pictured on this 1975 Topps card, between starting and relief before closing his career with San Diego and Toronto, where he earned the first win in Blue Jays franchise history in 1977.
