1975 Topps #334 Greg Gross

About Greg Gross
Gregory Eugene Gross was born August 1, 1952, in York, Pennsylvania, and signed with the Houston Astros in the fourth round of the 1970 draft. He led the Appalachian League in hits as a rookie pro, batting .351, then climbed Houston's system before debuting in the majors on September 5, 1973. Gross broke out in 1974 as the Astros' starting right fielder and leadoff hitter, batting .314 with a .393 on-base percentage over 156 games — production that earned him The Sporting News' National League Rookie Player of the Year honor and a runner-up finish in the official NL Rookie of the Year vote. His 1975 Topps card, #334, carries the resulting All-Star Rookie trophy and stands as his rookie card. That same year he reached base in 52 straight games, tying a Houston franchise record. Traded to the Cubs and then, in 1979, to the Phillies, Gross became one of the game's premier pinch hitters, helping Philadelphia win the 1980 World Series and closing his 17-year career with 143 pinch hits, fifth-most in major league history.
