About San Francisco Giants

The 1975 Giants went 80-81 to finish third in the National League West, 27½ games behind the powerhouse Cincinnati Reds, under manager Wes Westrum — a former Giants catcher from the Willie Mays era and ex-Mets skipper who had taken over the club in 1974. It was Westrum's final season running San Francisco. The year's headline act was rookie right-hander John Montefusco, who went 15-9 with a 2.88 ERA and 215 strikeouts to win NL Rookie of the Year; on August 24, teammate Ed Halicki no-hit the Mets 6-0 at Candlestick Park, striking out ten. Offensively, Bobby Murcer — acquired that winter in a trade for Bobby Bonds — joined Willie Montanez and Chris Speier atop a lineup that still finished well behind the eventual World Series champion Reds.
