About Charlie Williams
Charles Prosek Williams was drafted by the Mets in the seventh round of the 1968 draft out of Parsons College and reached the majors in 1971, debuting at Wrigley Field in a game Nolan Ryan won for the Cubs. On May 11, 1972, the Mets sent him to San Francisco, along with $50,000, in the trade that returned Willie Mays to New York — the deal that would define his career. Williams settled into the Giants' staff as a swingman from 1974 through 1978, working as both spot starter and reliever; 1975, the year pictured on his Topps card, was his busiest season, with 55 appearances, 98 innings and a 3.49 ERA. His card's back cartoon carries a printing error, listing '60 in.' instead of '6 in.' He finished his eight-year career with a 23-22 record, a 3.97 ERA and 257 strikeouts, all with the Mets and Giants. After baseball he drove a New York City taxi, then settled in Port Orange, Florida; he died in Daytona Beach in 2015.
