About Ed Goodson

James Edward Goodson, known to teammates as Goody, was the San Francisco Giants' first-round pick (third overall) in the 1968 draft out of East Tennessee State, where he had starred at shortstop. He reached the majors in September 1970 and spent parts of six seasons with the Giants, shuttling between third and first base as the club juggled Willie McCovey and Dave Kingman at those spots. His finest stretch came in 1973, when he hit .302 with 12 homers and briefly led the major leagues in batting average, reaching .333 in June. Injuries — knee surgery, a finger sliced open colliding with catcher Dave Rader, a torn hamstring — kept interrupting his push for a starting job. Traded to Atlanta in June 1975 and to the Dodgers that winter, Goodson closed his eight-year career as a reserve, reaching the 1977 World Series and striking out against Mike Torrez in Los Angeles' Game Six loss. His 1975 Topps card, #322, catches him with the Giants, his club since his 1970 debut.
