About Rudy May
Rudy May broke in with the 1965 Los Angeles Angels, working a one-hitter with a no-decision in his debut, then lost parts of three seasons to a torn shoulder ligament before returning for good in 1969. The hard-throwing lefty, nicknamed "the Dude" for his sharp-dressing ways, reinvented himself as a curveball specialist -- "People feared it," he said of the pitch -- with help from Yankees coach Whitey Ford after New York bought his contract from the Angels in June 1974. This 1975 Topps card catches May coming off a career-best 13 complete games and a 14-12, 3.06 season in which he was the toughest AL starter to take deep, allowing just nine homers in 212 innings. Traded to Baltimore in 1976 and later a contributor to Montreal's 95-win 1979 club, May returned to New York as a free agent and led the AL with a 2.46 ERA in 1980, starting Game Two of that year's ALCS. He retired after 1984 with 152 career wins and 1,760 strikeouts over 16 big-league seasons, and was never elected to the Hall of Fame.
