About Carmen Fanzone
Carmen Ronald Fanzone, a third baseman from Detroit's Cass Tech High School, signed with the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent in 1964 and spent seven years in the minors before debuting July 21, 1970. Boston traded him to the Chicago Cubs before the 1971 season in the deal that sent Phil Gagliano to the Red Sox, and he became a versatile utility man who played all four infield spots plus both outfield corners, wearing No. 23 for Chicago. His best season came in 1972, when he set career highs with 8 home runs, 42 RBIs and 26 runs in 86 games — and caught the final out, a Gary Jestadt popup, in Milt Pappas's no-hitter that September. He's one of only three Cubs to homer in consecutive pinch-hit at-bats. His Topps cards list three different birth years across 1973-75 — a quirk he later admitted talking the company into so he'd "stay the same age." His 1975 card closed a five-year big-league career; that year he played for the Pacific Coast League champion Hawaii Islanders, then became a professional jazz trumpeter.
