About Steve Hargan

Steve Hargan signed with the Cleveland Indians in 1961 after a tryout at Municipal Stadium impressed the front office, then climbed through five minor-league stops before debuting on August 3, 1965. The 6-foot-3 right-hander became a full-time Cleveland starter in 1966 and delivered his most memorable outing that May, entering a tie game in relief and working ten scoreless innings to close out a 17-inning win over the Angels. In 1967 he made his only All-Star team, going 14-6 with a 2.62 ERA and leading the American League with six shutouts. Arm and ankle injuries wore him down over the next several seasons until Cleveland sent him to the minors and Texas traded for him in December 1973. Hargan became a steady Rangers starter from 1974 to 1976, going 12-9 in his comeback year, then in the 1975 season pictured on his Topps card threw 11 1/3 shutout innings against the Angels in a 13-inning, 1-0 win. He finished his career in 1977 with Toronto, Texas, and Atlanta, retiring at 87-107 with 891 strikeouts.
