About Steve Brye

Stephen Robert Brye was born February 4, 1949, in Alameda, California, and was a first-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 1967 draft out of St. Elizabeth High School in Oakland. He debuted with Minnesota on September 3, 1970, and spent his early seasons as a reserve outfielder before winning the starting center field job in spring training 1974, when he hit .283 and led the Twins in doubles. This 1975 Topps card, #151, catches him coming off that breakout year. Brye played seven seasons in Minnesota, one with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1977, and closed his career with Pittsburgh in 1978, finishing with a .258 average, 30 home runs and 193 RBI. He is best remembered for a routine fly ball he failed to catch in left field on the final day of the 1976 season, letting George Brett's hit fall for a single that edged teammate Hal McRae for the American League batting title, a still-debated moment in Twins lore.
