1975 Topps #346 Bobby Darwin

About Bobby Darwin
Arthur Bobby Lee Darwin was born February 16, 1943, in the Watts section of Los Angeles, where he starred as a pitcher at Jordan High School and signed with the expansion Angels for a $40,000 bonus in 1962, debuting with Los Angeles that September at 19. Wildness and a chronically sore arm stalled him in the low minors for years until the Dodgers claimed him in the 1968 Rule 5 draft and converted him to the outfield at Spokane on manager Tom Lasorda's urging. Traded to the Twins for Paul Powell in October 1971, Darwin became Minnesota's right fielder and power threat, driving in 264 runs with 65 home runs from 1972-74, leading the AL in strikeouts all three years while placing among its top 10 in homers and RBIs twice. Dealt to Milwaukee in June 1975, the year of this card, he closed his career with the Red Sox and Cubs by 1977 with 83 homers and a .251 average, then spent decades scouting for the Dodgers, signing at least nine future major leaguers.
