1975 Topps #235 Jack Billingham

About Jack Billingham
Jack Billingham signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1961 out of Winter Park, Florida, and spent seven seasons in the Dodgers' farm system before debuting in 1968. Left unprotected, he was taken by Montreal in the expansion draft and routed to Houston, where he developed from reliever into a full-time starter. The November 1971 trade that sent him to Cincinnati along with Joe Morgan, Cesar Geronimo and two others helped build the Big Red Machine. In 1973 he went 19-10 with a career-best 3.04 ERA, leading the National League in starts, innings and shutouts, earning his only All-Star selection and the Reds' Johnny Vander Meer Award; he followed with another 19-win season in 1974. Lanky in his minor-league days, he carried the nicknames "Blade" and "Bone" for his thin frame. His signature mark came in October: across the 1972, 1975 and 1976 World Series he posted a 0.36 ERA, the lowest in Series history until Madison Bumgarner topped it in 2014, anchoring Cincinnati's back-to-back titles. His 1975 Topps card, #235, caught him mid-dynasty. He was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1984.
