1975 Topps #369 Merv Rettenmund

About Merv Rettenmund
Merv Rettenmund's 1975 Topps card catches him with the Cincinnati Reds, a trade that soon delivered his second World Series ring. Signed by the Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1964 after turning down a Dallas Cowboys draft pick, Rettenmund reached Baltimore in 1968 following a Minor League Player of the Year season at Rochester. He became the Orioles' "noble substitute" during their 1969-1971 pennant-winning dynasty, playing all three outfield spots and twice leading the club in batting average. His signature moment came in Game Five of the 1970 World Series, when his home run off Tony Cloninger sealed Baltimore's title over Cincinnati. He hit .318 in 1971, third-best in the American League. Dealt to the Reds in December 1973, Rettenmund helped Cincinnati win the 1975 World Series, then closed his 13-year career (.271, 66 HR, 329 RBI) as one of baseball's sharpest pinch-hitters. He later built a long career as a hitting coach, tutoring Tony Gwynn through half his eight batting titles in San Diego and earning a third championship ring with Oakland's 1989 World Series champions.
