About Gorman Thomas
Selected 21st overall by the expansion Seattle Pilots in the 1969 draft — the first pick in franchise history — Gorman Thomas turned down a football scholarship to Florida State to sign, then led the minors in home runs and strikeouts at three separate stops before reaching Milwaukee in 1973. His 1975 Topps card catches him mid-struggle, a bench-and-platoon outfielder who hit just .179 that season and was still years from stardom (the back's .214 average for his 1972 San Antonio season is a misprint of .241). Nicknamed "Stormin' Gorman" by 6-foot-8 Brewers coach Frank Howard, Thomas broke through in 1978 and led the American League in home runs in 1979 (45, a career high) and again in 1982 (39, shared with Reggie Jackson), earning his only All-Star selection in 1981. He anchored center field for Milwaukee's 1982 AL champions, homering in the ALCS clincher before the Brewers fell to the Cardinals in a seven-game World Series. Thomas retired after the 1986 season with 268 home runs over 14 years and remains one of the most popular players in Brewers history.
