1975 Topps #533 Rudy Meoli

About Rudy Meoli
Rudolph Bartholomew Meoli was born May 1, 1951, in Troy, New York, and was drafted by the California Angels in the fourth round of the 1969 draft out of Royal Oak High School in Covina, California. After a brief 1971 call-up, he won the starting shortstop job in 1973 when Bobby Valentine suffered a season-ending leg injury that May. Meoli started 87 games at short that season, setting career highs with 120 games, 68 hits, and 23 RBI, and hit both of his career home runs that year — off Joe Coleman, then off Gene Garber in a 19-8 rout of Kansas City in which he drove in six runs. His 1975 Topps card, #533, catches him in his last full season as an Angel before Dave Chalk took the shortstop job and California traded him to San Diego. Meoli spent 1976-77 in the Cincinnati farm system, then closed his six-year, 310-game career with the 1978 Cubs and 1979 Phillies, batting .212 with 133 hits and 40 RBI.
