1975 Topps #534 Alex Johnson

About Alex Johnson
Alexander Johnson, nicknamed "Bull" for his powerful build, signed with the Phillies out of Detroit's Northwestern High School in 1961 and debuted July 25, 1964. Traded to Cincinnati, he hit .312 in 1968 to win The Sporting News' National League Comeback Player of the Year award. Dealt to the Angels in 1969, Johnson had his signature season in 1970: an All-Star selection and the American League batting title, edging Carl Yastrzemski .3289 to .3286 on the final day, with 202 hits that stood as an Angels franchise record for decades. A 1971 suspension for loafing prompted the players' union to file a grievance; an arbitrator ruled his conduct stemmed from an emotional disturbance and ordered him paid as though he had been on the disabled list, a landmark early labor case. After stops in Cleveland and Texas, Johnson joined the Yankees in September 1974 and homered in his first at-bat with the club. This 1975 Topps card, number 534, catches him in his final Yankees season as regular designated hitter, before a knee injury and new manager Billy Martin ended his tenure that September. He closed a 13-year career with Detroit in 1976, batting .288 with 78 homers.
