About Gene Tenace

Gene Tenace, born Fiore Gino Tenacci in Russellton, Pennsylvania, was raised in Lucasville, Ohio, where his maternal grandfather - who Americanized the family name - nicknamed him "Steamboat" for his block-like build. The Kansas City Athletics drafted him in the 20th round of the inaugural 1965 draft out of Valley High School, and he debuted with Oakland in 1969, spending several seasons as a third-string catcher before backing up Dave Duncan in 1971. Given the starting job for the 1972 postseason, Tenace became the first player to homer in his first two career World Series at-bats, finished with four home runs and nine RBI against Cincinnati, and won World Series MVP as Oakland won the first of three straight titles. He shifted between catcher and first base through the dynasty years, leading the American League in walks in 1974 and, in 1975, posting career highs of 29 home runs, 87 RBI and 106 walks while starting at first base in that summer's All-Star Game. Tenace later played for the Padres, Cardinals and Pirates, retiring with a .388 on-base percentage still fourth-best all-time among catchers, and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.
