About Steve Kline
Steven Jack Kline, a right-hander out of Chelan, Washington, was drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 1966 draft and debuted in New York on July 10, 1970. His best season came in 1972: 16 wins, a 2.40 ERA, four shutouts and 236⅓ innings across 32 starts. On April 26, 1974, New York sent him with Fritz Peterson, Fred Beene and Tom Buskey to Cleveland for Chris Chambliss, Dick Tidrow and Cecil Upshaw, and Kline finished that year in an Indians uniform. Arm trouble wiped out his entire 1975 season, so his card #639 shows a pitcher who never took the mound that year, then he spent 1976 in the minors trying to rebuild before closing his career with 16 relief outings for Atlanta in 1977. He retired at 43-45 with a 3.26 ERA and 240 strikeouts over 750⅓ innings. Kline later coached pitching at his old Wenatchee, Washington high school and died June 4, 2018.
