1975 Topps #329 Ted Kubiak

About Ted Kubiak
Signed by the Kansas City Athletics for a $500 bonus after a tryout-camp scout tapped him on the shoulder during a high school tournament game, Ted Kubiak spent six seasons in the minors before sticking with the A's in 1967. A switch-hitting infielder who taught himself defense from scratch, he became the roster glue behind Oakland's early-1970s dynasty, filling in at short for Bert Campaneris, at second for Dick Green, and at third for Sal Bando -- prompting teammate Tony La Russa to later call him the team's most valuable player for exactly that versatility. Kubiak was part of all three Oakland championships from 1972 to 1974, scoring the winning run in Game Three of the 1973 World Series against the Mets. His 1975 Topps card catches him in an Oakland uniform during that title run, one stop in a career that also touched Milwaukee, St. Louis, Texas, and San Diego. He later spent two decades managing and coaching in the minors, most notably as Cleveland's longtime infield instructor.
