1975 Topps #562 Gary Nolan

About Gary Nolan
Gary Nolan broke into the majors at 18, taken by the Reds with the 13th overall pick in the 1966 draft out of Oroville High School in Northern California. He debuted April 15, 1967, beating Houston 7-3, and closed his rookie season 14-8 with a 2.58 ERA and 206 strikeouts, finishing third in NL Rookie of the Year voting. That June he struck out Willie Mays four times in a single game. A hard-throwing righty, Nolan helped anchor the Big Red Machine's rotation, going 18-7 in 1970 as Cincinnati won the pennant and tossing nine shutout innings in Game One of that year's NLCS. His lone All-Star selection came in 1972, a 15-5, 1.99 ERA season in which he led the league in winning percentage. Arm and shoulder trouble wiped out most of 1973 and all of 1974; his 1975 Topps card catches him mid-comeback, a 15-9 season that helped Cincinnati beat Boston in the World Series. He won his first Series game the next year as the Reds swept the Yankees, then retired after 1977 with a 110-70 record and 3.08 ERA. The Reds inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 1983.
