About Wilbur Howard

Wilbur Leon Howard, a switch-hitting outfielder out of Holbrook High School in Lowell, North Carolina, was drafted by the Seattle Pilots in the 19th round of the 1968 amateur draft; by the time he debuted in a September 1973 call-up, the franchise had relocated to Milwaukee as the Brewers. That offseason Houston acquired him in a trade for pitcher Larry Yount and a minor leaguer. Recalled by the Astros in June 1974, Howard settled in as Houston's fourth outfielder behind César Cedeño, José Cruz, and Greg Gross. His 1975 Topps card, #563, captures the finest season of his career: he appeared in a career-high 121 games and hit .283 with 32 stolen bases, second on the club only to Cedeño's 50. Houston shifted him back into a reserve role in 1976, and he closed out his career with the Astros through 1978 before finishing in the minors with the Charleston Charlies in 1979. Howard died in 2022 in Humble, Texas, at age 73.
