1975 Topps #564 Tommy Davis

About Tommy Davis
Herman Thomas Davis Jr. signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers out of Boys High School in Brooklyn in 1956, picking them over the Yankees after a personal phone call from Jackie Robinson. He climbed through Hornell, Kokomo, Victoria, Montreal, and Spokane before sticking with Los Angeles in 1960, then broke out in 1962 with a .346 average, a franchise-record 153 RBI, and a league-best 230 hits, finishing third in MVP voting. He repeated as NL batting champion in 1963, then hit .400 in that fall's World Series sweep of the Yankees, driving in the winning run of the Dodgers' 1-0 Game 3 victory. A shattered ankle in 1965 slowed a Cooperstown-caliber pace, and the next decade carried him through ten teams, including a memorable turn as Jim Bouton's teammate and friend chronicled in Ball Four. Davis found a late-career home in Baltimore from 1972-75 as the Orioles' first full-time designated hitter, batting .306 in 1973 and piling up 181 hits in 1974 to win that year's Outstanding Designated Hitter Award, starting in both of the club's ALCS runs against Oakland. His 1975 Topps card, #564, catches the two-time NL batting champion in his Baltimore prime.
