About Joe Torre
Joe Torre, born July 18, 1940, in Brooklyn's Marine Park section, signed with the Milwaukee Braves in 1959 and won a minor-league batting title at Eau Claire before debuting in the majors on September 25, 1960. A catcher who also played first and third base, he starred for the Braves (1960-68) and Cardinals (1969-74) before joining the Mets in 1975, the club shown on his #565 base card. A nine-time All-Star and 1965 Gold Glove winner, Torre's signature season came in 1971, when he led the majors in batting average (.363), hits, and RBI (137) to win the NL MVP with St. Louis - the honor recreated on his 1975 Topps MVP-subset card (#209), paired with Vida Blue's 1971 AL MVP season in that year's Topps design. He retired with 2,342 hits and a .297 average, then became Mets player-manager in 1977. Nicknamed "Clueless Joe" by the New York Daily News when the Yankees hired him in 1995, Torre answered by leading New York to four World Series titles and six pennants (1996-2007), then added two more division titles with the Dodgers. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.
