About Bill Sudakis

Bill Sudakis broke in with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a September call-up in 1968, homering in his first game. By his rookie season in 1969 he was part of a core of young Dodgers prospects nicknamed "The Mod Squad," who appeared together on the cover of Sports Illustrated. A switch-hitting third baseman who also caught and played first, Sudakis hit a career-high .264 in 1970 before knee trouble limited him to 41 games in 1971. He moved through the Mets, Rangers, and Yankees, splitting time in 1974 as Ron Blomberg's designated-hitter platoon partner and Chris Chambliss's backup at first base — the New York season pictured on this 1975 Topps card. The Yankees traded him to the Angels that December, and he closed his eight-year, 59-homer career in 1975 with brief stints in Anaheim and Cleveland. Sudakis died in 2021 at age 75.
