1975 Topps #489 Cecil Cooper

About Cecil Cooper
Cecil Cooper was a lean left-handed first baseman out of Brenham, Texas, drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 1968 draft. He debuted with Boston in 1971 and became the Red Sox's regular first baseman before the club dealt him to the Milwaukee Brewers in December 1976 for George Scott and Bernie Carbo — a trade that transformed his career. In Milwaukee from 1977 to 1987, Cooper punished American League pitching, batting over .300 seven straight seasons and leading the league in RBIs twice, driving in a career-high 126 in 1983. He made five All-Star teams (1979, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1985), won two Gold Gloves, three straight Silver Sluggers (1980-1982), and earned the 1983 Roberto Clemente Award. Cooper's #489 card catches him in his final Boston seasons, the same span in which he and the Red Sox reached the 1975 World Series; he later returned to the Fall Classic with Milwaukee in 1982, finishing his 17-year career with a .298 average, 2,192 hits and 241 home runs.
