1975 Topps #490 Reggie Smith

About Reggie Smith
Card #490 in the 1975 Topps set catches Reggie Smith in his second season with the St. Louis Cardinals, sandwiched between a decade in Boston and his prime years in Los Angeles. Born April 2, 1945, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and raised in South Central Los Angeles, Smith broke in with the Red Sox in 1966, finished runner-up for AL Rookie of the Year in 1967, and helped Boston to the pennant that fall. Traded to St. Louis for Rick Wise and Bernie Carbo after the 1973 season, he delivered two of his best all-around years for the Cardinals, hitting over .300 with strong power and on-base numbers in both 1974 and 1975 en route to All-Star selections each season. A switch-hitter with one of the game's great throwing arms, Smith went on to help the Dodgers win three pennants and the 1981 World Series, finishing his 17-year career with 314 home runs, a .287 average, and a 137 OPS+ that outranks many Hall of Famers, though Smith himself has never been inducted.
