About Ray Fosse
Ray Fosse was the Cleveland Indians' first pick in Major League Baseball's first-ever amateur draft, taken seventh overall in June 1965, and signed for a $28,000 bonus. The catcher debuted with Cleveland in September 1967 and broke through in 1970, hitting .313 with 16 home runs in the season's first half to earn an All-Star selection. He is best remembered for the final play of that year's All-Star Game, when a collision with Pete Rose at home plate separated his shoulder — an injury he played through, still winning the AL Gold Glove. A second All-Star nod and Gold Glove followed in 1971. Traded to Oakland in March 1973, Fosse caught for the Athletics' back-to-back World Series champions of 1973 and 1974, working a rotation anchored by Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue and Ken Holtzman; his 1975 Topps card shows him mid-dynasty in Oakland's green and gold. Teammates called him the Marion Mule, for his hometown and his stubborn, workhorse toughness through a career pocked with injury. He closed his playing days with Cleveland, Seattle and Milwaukee, then broadcast for the Athletics for decades. Oakland inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 2022, a year after his death.
